The Province of BC announced on September 7th that the allowable rent increase for 2019 is 4.5%. That would be the largest allowable increase in 15 years.
A renter paying $2000 rent would have to pay an extra $1080 per year.

Following public outrage and efforts by organizations like the Vancouver Tenant's Union, the BCGEU, and COPE the provincial government rolled back the increase on Sept 26th to 2.5%. But that's not enough. Rents
are already too high in Vancouver, with the cost of an average apartment in Vancouver exceeding the full time wages of a minimum wage worker. We need a rent freeze in Vancouver.

Therefore, we the undersigned, are calling on the Vancouver city council to:

  • Declare a "Housing State of Emergency" and officially support a 0% rent increase over the next four years
  • Negotiate with the provincial government to set the maximum allowable rent increase at 0% for the next four years within the City of Vancouver

If the province of BC fails to support a Rent Freeze, Vancouver city council should implement a city-wide Rent Freeze policy. When landlords apply for their business license each year, the 0% increase will be a requirement of their license.

Will you sign?

Do have a look at a Metro Vancouver research paper: The Cost Burden of Housing and Transportation in Metro Vancouver…

    This increase is ‘unbearable’!

Rents are already high enough in Vancouver so we need to have 0 % increase to take the pressure off renters.

Even though we rent a suite we do not agree with the increase at the present time in Vancouver. It negatively affects those who can least afford it and raises prices for everyone, homeowners and renters, plus putting more pressure on land values and rates. The only people it is helping are developers and large commercial landowners.

We need a party of citizen and earth rights and I am very proud of Jean Swanson for putting her entire self on the line. This is true activism and we all need to support it. All other parties seem to be so involved in corporate tights we have forgotten what the people are saying on the street.

This is the kind of action, 4.5% increase on top of the already highest rents in Canada, that is the tipping point. Either we act now or we lose our city. A recent Angus Reid poll found more than 60% of the people thinking of leaving. That would be giving up without a fight.

It’s too much! I’m already struggling…and so are many others. We need strict rent control now! Everybody talks about it; nobody does anything about it. Not even the NDP gov’t. Wake up please!

How can the increase be more than 3.7%?? We are gouged enough as it is. I can just barely afford to feed myself and pay my one bedroom rent here while still travelling an hour and a half to get to work (one way) each day.
