The Province of BC announced on September 7th that the allowable rent increase for 2019 is 4.5%. That would be the largest allowable increase in 15 years.
A renter paying $2000 rent would have to pay an extra $1080 per year.

Following public outrage and efforts by organizations like the Vancouver Tenant's Union, the BCGEU, and COPE the provincial government rolled back the increase on Sept 26th to 2.5%. But that's not enough. Rents
are already too high in Vancouver, with the cost of an average apartment in Vancouver exceeding the full time wages of a minimum wage worker. We need a rent freeze in Vancouver.

Therefore, we the undersigned, are calling on the Vancouver city council to:

  • Declare a "Housing State of Emergency" and officially support a 0% rent increase over the next four years
  • Negotiate with the provincial government to set the maximum allowable rent increase at 0% for the next four years within the City of Vancouver

If the province of BC fails to support a Rent Freeze, Vancouver city council should implement a city-wide Rent Freeze policy. When landlords apply for their business license each year, the 0% increase will be a requirement of their license.

On top of the 4% rent hike we received this year, another 4.5% next year will be truly unstainable for us and many other working families trying to stay in our homes. I can assure you that our incomes did not go up 8.5% over the past 2 years. Why should landlords be granted this huge hike? We need rents to be completely frozen at least until tenants incomes have caught up with the absurd rent increases that have been allowed to happen over the past few years.

Enough already Vancouver. People are spending $2000 in the West End for 500 Sq ft apartment.

Familys are cramped into one bedroom units paying exorbitant rents. It’s time to listen to the people, and stop the insanity of overcharging for a necessity.

The lower mainland, especially Vancouver, is already unaffordable to so many renters. A rent increase only compounds our housing crisis.

Life in BC for the urban and rural working class is already largely unsustainable, unaffordable and the problems involved in dealing with these inadequacies is already unbearable. We have suffered enough under years of liberal administrations, slashing our working rights and acting in ways that reduce affordability for the average, working class Canadian. Particularly shameful to see such an action under an NDP government WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT THE WORKING CLASS AND THE OPPRESSED. This really exposes the bald face of parliamentary cretenism, revolutionary platforms and phraseology are used to mask what really amount to the same liberal platforms and policies. Reverse this disturbing trend now, speak and act in the name of the people and democracy!!
